Also known as Movies. Here are some amature opinions on some movies that I have seen.. National Lampoon's Animal House This movie is a personal favourite of mine. A good ole American tale of frat boy rebellion in university. Great jokes all the way through an cool characters really give us an amusing insight into the foreign world (for us australians) of 1960s fraternity culture. Weed smoking, pre-marital intercourse and an red-faced Dean Wirner all contribute to great film with good laughs. "Delta House!!!" he he he.... **** (4 asterisks) The Beach. I was kinda surprised with this one. It was decent movie. The story is based around Leanardo De'Caprio's stupid American character and his finding of a secret tribal community totally secluded from the rest of the world. The tribe live on a paradise like beach setting where they seek to escape the realities of the real world. I think the sheet beauty of this beach and the idea that it is mostly untouched by humanity is what ammount the the intense exotic feeling of the film. Whether it is deliberate of not, De'Caprio's character comes across as a real pigheaded American and it is his stupidity that eventually destroys the islander's paradise. Overall I would say this movie is worth the watch if just for the idea that some untainted perfect beach could still be out there. *** (3 asterisks) The Ninth Gate. Hmmm... not an extremely interesting movie by a long shot. Basically, Jonny Depp, the main character has to go around the world comparing the last 3 remaining books named "the ninth gate" of their authenticity. The propper book, when used correctly is supposed to summon the devil himself. Depp twists and turns through the fairly uninteresting plot. I would have hated to see this at the movies. I wouldn't recommend this unless you are really bored. I give it ** (2 asterisks) Moulin Rouge. Wow.. This movie was great. I sat there in the cinema with a big cheesy grin plastered to my face almost all the way through. Jim Schembrie described the film as being filmed in "Sparkle Vision" and he is spot on. More of a musical than anything else, this movie is a must see for anyone who appreciates music. This film is a tribute to the music of the last century and much, much more. Go and see it in a cinema, it'l be worth it. ****.5 (4.5 asterisks) Sweet and Low Down. The first Woody Allen movie I've seen and to my surprise it was really good fun to watch. The story revolves around the retelling of a famous guitarist "somthing bennet" (cant quite remember the name, but he is played by Sean Penn) and his struggle for fame and quirky relationships. Sean Penn plays the slighly loopy artist extremely well. The story is told in an almost documentry like form with commetries from Woody Allen and some other music experts. The jazz in the movie is great and with the characters creates a very warm 1930-40s atmosphere. I think I will have to watch some more Woody Allen flicks ;-).. **** (4 asterisks) |
